McIlroy Seeks to Secure a Juicy Prize at the Masters

Augusta, Georgia – Rory McIlroy could pocket $4.5 million from a prize purse increased to $22.5 million if he manages to maintain his six-stroke lead in the final 36 holes of the 90th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.

The tournament announced on Saturday that the total prize money for this year’s Masters has increased by $1.5 million compared to last year.

The runner-up will receive $2.43 million, the third place will get $1.53 million, and the fourth place will take $1.08 million.

The Masters prize money has more than doubled in the last 10 years, reaching $10 million in 2016.

This year, the top 39 finishers will receive at least $101,250. The player in 50th place will get $56,700. Golfers who do not make the 36-hole cut will receive $25,000.

After registering six birdies in his last seven holes of the second round for a 65 under par, McIlroy starts Saturday with a six-stroke lead over Sam Burns and the 2018 Masters champion, Patrick Reed. It’s the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history.

McIlroy, 36 years old, is already number 2 in career earnings on the PGA Tour with more than $110 million.
