Brooks Koepka on top of the French Open

The American golfer Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, showcased his skill at the French Open by achieving five consecutive birdies in the second half of the course on Saturday. With an impressive round of 65 strokes, six under par, Koepka positioned himself at the top of the leaderboard, seeking his first victory in over a year. Koepka shares the lead with Min Woo Lee, who signed a card of 68 strokes, both remaining with a cumulative score of 11 under par (202 strokes). The duo leads by one stroke a group of pursuers, among whom is Michael Kim, also from the United States. This is the third consecutive week that Koepka has competed on the European Tour, after failing to make the cut at the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. In addition, he failed to make the cut at three of the four major tournaments this year. Koepka’s last victory was in August 2024 at the LIV Golf League, in Greenbrier, West Virginia.

I feel like my game has gone in the right direction. The results haven’t shown. I feel a lot closer. I’m happy with the work I’ve put in over the last few months, and nothing has shown, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to win tomorrow.

Koepka attributed his outstanding performance at the Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche mainly to a good performance in putting. In his round, he achieved eight birdies, but finished with a bogey on the 18th hole, a par 3, by missing a 6-foot putt. For his part, Lee, who won the Houston Open earlier this year, failed to advance beyond the first week in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Guido Migliozzi of Italy (66) and Marcus Armitage of England (71) joined Kim in the group that is one stroke behind. Kim completed his round with 66 strokes.
