John Daly Sets Negative Record on the PGA Tour Champions
Golfer John Daly etched his name in the PGA Tour Champions record books, but not exactly for a positive feat. This Friday, during the Sanford International, Daly recorded a score of 19 strokes on the 12th hole, a par 5. This mark surpasses his previous personal record by one stroke. In 1998, during the Bay Hill Invitational, Daly scored 18 strokes on the 6th hole, also a par 5, after sending his 3-wood shot into the water six consecutive times. From the Minnehaha Country Club, where the tournament was held, the detailed information was somewhat imprecise, as the PGA Tour Champions does not have a laser system for recording each shot. According to the breakdown of the strokes, Daly sent his first shot into the rough, and the next seven into the water. Finally, he managed to overcome the water hazard, placing his seventeenth stroke on the edge of the green, and completing the hole with a total of 19. This result exceeds by three strokes the previous highest mark on a PGA Tour Champions hole, established by three players, the most recent by Bruce Crampton in 1996 at the Greater Grand Rapids Open. Unlike his previous performance at Bay Hill, where he recovered with a birdie on the next hole, on this occasion Daly settled for a par on the 13th hole. Daly finished the day with a total of 88 strokes. His worst score on the PGA Tour was 90 strokes, recorded in the second round of the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook in 2014. In that tournament, he had a 12 on the 16th hole, after sending three shots into the water, a shot with a 7-iron and three chips to reach the green.
On this occasion, Daly shared the round with Stephen Ames and Ángel Cabrera, winner of two majors. Cabrera, who was celebrating his 56th birthday, had an outstanding performance, with a score of 64 strokes, leading the tournament with a difference of 24 strokes over Daly.
