David Puig Crowned Australian PGA Champion
Spanish golfer David Puig has etched his name in golf history by winning the Australian PGA Championship, joining the legend Seve Ballesteros as the only Spaniards to achieve this feat. Puig, with an outstanding performance at the Royal Queensland GC, demonstrated his skill by surpassing a competitive group of players. The 23-year-old young talent, currently in LIV Golf, took the lead with consecutive birdies on holes two, three and four, culminating in a round of five under par on Sunday. He finished the tournament with a total of 18 under par, two strokes ahead of Chinese player Wenyi Ding. The final round began with intense competition, with 31 players only six strokes off the lead. However, the Spaniard, consistent throughout the tournament, with a record of 68, 67, 65 and 66, and committing only two bogeys throughout the competition, held firm and secured the $450,000 prize. Puig is the ninth international winner of the event in almost 100 years and the second since 1998. His victory puts him in the wake of Ballesteros, who won the tournament in 1981.Puig expressed his admiration for Ballesteros, highlighting his influence on Spanish golf and his desire to emulate his style and attitude. The golfer, who left university to join the LIV tour in 2022, has been competing on the DP World Tour in Europe and in the majors for the last two years. Before the event in Brisbane, he committed as a full-time member for the European circuit in 2026. Marc Leishman and Min Woo Lee also got close to the top, but mistakes on the 14th hole and Puig’s birdie on the 13th gave him an advantage that he maintained until the end, despite Ding’s birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. Adam Scott finished in seventh place, while Nick Voke and Daniel Hillier achieved a tie for third and fifth place, respectively. Leishman, despite his three consecutive third places, has yet to achieve a major title in Australia.Being next to Seve’s name is something very special.
