Verstappen Expresses Frustration Over Focus on Penalty Points

MONTREAL – Max Verstappen, visibly annoyed, expressed his irritation at the “childish” focus on his penalty points situation, calling it something that “is already getting on his nerves.” Verstappen, one penalty point away from a race suspension, was outqualified by George Russell in the Canadian Grand Prix. This happened two weeks after an incident where Verstappen collided with Russell’s car in Spain. Russell, seemingly enjoying the situation, made a direct comment in the post-qualifying interviews.

I have a few more points on my license to play. We’ll see.

When the topic came up in the post-race press conference, Verstappen mumbled something under his breath and shook his head while Russell was answering. “I don’t need to hear it again. It’s really getting on my nerves,” Verstappen said when asked about the subject. Russell, who was next to him, reacted with a laugh at the answer. “You guys talk about this on Thursday. It’s a waste of time. It’s very childish. That’s why I don’t want to say much either, because this world we live in is really annoying,” Verstappen continued.

The FIA confirmed that the phrase “I’m getting fed up” would not warrant any further action under the rules against profanity in press conferences. Later in the session, when asked if the situation added more pressure than usual, Verstappen raised both hands in the air mid-question, gave a thumbs up and sarcastically said: “Yes, I feel good.” Verstappen is in a delicate position for the next two races. The F1 penalty points system covers a 12-month period. Two of Verstappen’s points expire on June 30, meaning that even a relatively minor transgression this weekend or at the Austrian Grand Prix in two weeks could leave him out of the following race.
