Lance Stroll has been penalized with five grid positions for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, after causing a collision with Esteban Ocon during Saturday’s sprint race. The incident occurred at Turn 1, when Stroll collided with Ocon in the final stages of the race, which culminated in the safety car. The stewards determined that the Aston Martin driver was responsible for the collision, imposing a five-place grid penalty, regardless of his position in Sunday’s qualifying, in addition to two penalty points, totaling seven in a 12-month period.

Pilots who accumulate 12 points on their super license within a 12-month period receive a race ban.

“Car 18 attempted an overtake on the inside of car 31 at Turn 1, but misjudged the braking point and collided with car 31,” the stewards noted in their report. “The stewards determine that the driver of car 18 is entirely at fault and apply the corresponding penalty.

“As the penalized driver did not finish the race, a grid penalty equivalent to a 10-second time penalty is imposed.” The incident caused the second safety car of the 100 km race, after McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided at Turn 1 on the opening lap. The qualifying for Sunday’s race will start at 4 p.m. local time.
