Piastri Confides: Despite Leadership Cut, Fight for the F1 Title

3 Min Read

Oscar Piastri, a prominent figure in Formula 1, maintains his confidence in his chances of conquering the world championship, despite the reduction of his lead in the United States Grand Prix, where Lando Norris and Max Verstappen closed the gap. Piastri had a complicated weekend in Austin, including a crash with his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, during Saturday’s sprint race. Despite this, he achieved a fifth-place finish in the main race, while Verstappen took the victory. Norris’s second place reduced the gap to Piastri to just 14 points, while Verstappen, with 33 points gained over the weekend, decreased his disadvantage with the leader by 23 points, remaining 40 behind. The Australian driver, who finished behind Norris and Verstappen for the fourth consecutive race, acknowledges the need to improve his performance. However, he remains optimistic with five races remaining and 141 points at stake.

I still prefer to be where I am than with the other two. Definitely, Max and Red Bull have found a lot of pace since the summer break. We saw glimpses of it at the beginning of the year, but it has been consistent since then.

Piastri, who was champion in F2 and F3, has faced similar situations in the past and trusts his abilities.

I’ve been in fights that were just as close or even more so than what they are now. So I have the evidence that things can still go well and I still firmly believe that I can win the championship.

Verstappen, after a victory in Saturday’s sprint race, completed a perfect weekend at the Circuit of the Americas, securing a lights-to-flag victory. Norris, who started in second position, had to fight with Charles Leclerc to secure second place. Piastri remains calm in the face of Verstappen’s threat and acknowledges that there is still a lot of championship ahead.

There’s still a long way to go in the championship. For Max, he’s recovered very quickly, but it’s not a small gap with five races to go.

Verstappen, who ruled out his title chances before the summer break, is surprised by his current position.

We need to be perfect until the end to have a chance.
