Cameron Green: The New Promise of Australian Cricket

The 21-year-old allrounder, Cameron Green, from Western Australia, is ready to debut with the Australian national team at the Adelaide Oval. His expected debut generates great anticipation in the cricket world.

A Look at His Career

In first-class cricket, Green has shown exceptional performance. He has accumulated five centuries in 21 matches, highlighting an impressive 197, his best score, achieved this season against New South Wales. His batting average stands at 55.04. In a match against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, Green showcased his batting potential, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out, playing at positions 8 and 9. That match marked the last time he bowled for a year. With the ball, his average of 21.72 for his 33 wickets is notable, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, a team against which he also achieved his best figures of 6 for 30 in 2018. Although his career in white-ball formats doesn’t stand out as much, with only nine matches in List A and T20, it is with the red (and pink) ball where he has generated the most enthusiasm.

Great Expectations

The expectation is high. Greg Chappell has called him “the best since Ricky Ponting.” In a hypothetical scenario where Australia would play Tests and T20Is on the same day, Chappell selected him at number 6 in the Test team.

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar,” said Chappell. “He’s a real prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is a batsman with uncommon talent. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special. I would put him to bat at number 6 to start, but I think number 4 is his long-term position. The sooner he plays at this level, the sooner he will become the player he should be.”

Overcoming Obstacles

A recent scare occurred when Green was hit on the head by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Fortunately, tests ruled out fractures and it seems he will be able to debut after passing Cricket Australia’s protocols.

The Allrounder Dream?

With caution, Green has had restrictions on his releases due to a stress fracture in his back. He has worked on his technique with WA bowling coach Matt Mason and has been limited to four-over spells. However, he has demonstrated his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggests that restrictions could be relaxed. “I think he’ll bowl a bit more than that, once you’re selected in a Test match, you’re ready to play. That said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

An Anticipated Debut

In a way, yes. Warner and Pucovksi’s injuries have reconfigured the batting order, opening a space at number 6. Green, based on his current form, could be among Australia’s top six batsmen, according to Justin Langer and national selector Trevor Hohns.
