Oscar Collazo Retains World Titles in a Controversial Victory

Puerto Rican boxer Oscar Collazo successfully defended his WBO and WBA light flyweight titles on Saturday, achieving a stoppage in the seventh round against Jayson Vayson. The decision by Vayson’s team to stop the fight generated controversy. The fight remained competitive until the moment of the interruption. Vayson, showing an aggressive attitude, sought to counter Collazo, despite having been knocked down in the first round after a left hook. Vayson managed to recover and focused his attacks on Collazo’s body in the fourth round. Collazo responded with combinations, taking Vayson to the ropes during the sixth and seventh rounds. Despite the intense action, the Vayson team requested the stoppage of the fight, even though the boxer did not appear to be in obvious danger.

They thought I was stunned, but I wanted to keep fighting. Of course, I respect the team’s decision for the boxer’s safety. I felt the blows on my body, but I believed I could handle it.

Collazo, who represents Puerto Rico, added his third consecutive victory by stoppage. The champion has held his title since 2023, when he conquered the WBO title after defeating Melvin Jerusalem in May of that year. In 2024, he added the WBA title by defeating Knockout CP Freshmart in November.

I think the stoppage was good. I was pressing, choosing my shots. In the seventh round we were going to keep hitting, and we got the stoppage. In the last three rounds I was wearing him down. I knew I was going to get it. I applied the pressure as I wanted. I saw that he was getting tired and I wanted to choose my shots in that round, and it stopped.

Gabriela Fundora Dominates in the Co-Star

In the co-main event, undisputed women’s flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora secured a dominant seventh-round stoppage victory over Alexas Kubicki. Kubicki replaced Argentina’s Ayelen “Piru” Granadino, who was denied a visa to enter the United States. Fundora didn’t take long to connect combinations on Kubicki, who tried to resist his taller opponent, before the fight was stopped.
