Keyshawn Davis Loses Title Due to Weight Gain

American boxer Keyshawn Davis will lose his WBO lightweight title after exceeding the weight limit prior to his scheduled title defense against Edwin De Los Santos. The fight will take place Saturday night at the Scope Arena in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia.

Davis, 26, weighed in at 139.3 pounds, exceeding the 135-pound weight limit by 4.3 pounds. Instead of attempting to cut weight, Davis chose to relinquish his title.

I missed weight. I’ve been making this weight for four years. I was up late last night and early this morning trying to make weight, but I missed it.

Due to this weighing failure, only De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) will be eligible to win the WBO title on Saturday night. This was going to be Davis’s first title defense after becoming world champion by defeating Denys Berinchyk in February. Now, Davis will seek to focus on Saturday’s fight and then compete in a new weight category.

The show must go on.

The weight situation was not a total surprise, as Davis already had plans to move up to the super lightweight weight class regardless of the outcome.

Honestly, I was going to go up to 140 pounds after this anyway.
