Musetti Receives Warning for Unsportsmanlike Conduct at Roland Garros
Paris – Lorenzo Musetti was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct during his French Open quarterfinal match against Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday.Unlike most high-level tennis tournaments, which use the electronic line detection system, Roland-Garros still has line judges on the court to determine whether the strokes are in or out.
Musetti, who won a bronze medal for Italy at the Paris Olympics and was a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, had just lost a game and was down 5-3 in the second set of his match on the Philippe-Chatrier court. While Musetti was receiving the balls to serve in the next game, he kicked one with his left foot, and it hit a line judge who was behind the baseline.
The chair umpire immediately announced to the public that Musetti was being warned for a code violation. There is no penalty for an initial warning of that type.
Shortly after, Tiafoe won that set. Musetti had won the first set in the best-of-five-set match, with a place in the semifinals at stake.
Finally, Musetti, the eighth seed, defeated Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the French Open semi-finals for the first time in his career.
