Luke Weaver, Yankees Closer, Out with Injury

A concerning piece of news for the New York Yankees, league leaders. Closer Luke Weaver will be out of action for four to six weeks due to a hamstring injury, according to sources. The player suffered the injury during the three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Weaver threw an inning on Saturday, allowing a home run and throwing 14 pitches. On Sunday, during the last game of the series, he began to warm up to pitch the ninth inning, but stopped due to hamstring discomfort and did not enter the game. The Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, reported that Weaver would undergo tests on Monday in New York, taking advantage of the team’s day off. The Yankees are scheduled to start a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. Weaver has maintained his good performance from the 2024 season, with an ERA of 1.05 and limiting his opponents to an OPS of .412 in 24 appearances. He began the year as Devin Williams’ primary setup man before taking over the closer role at the end of April, achieving eight saves in nine opportunities.

The Yankees are expected to place Weaver on the injured list on Tuesday, with Fernando Cruz ready to be activated. Williams would return to the closer role. The two-time All-Star hasn’t allowed a run in 11 of his last 13 appearances, lowering his ERA from 11.25 to 6.23 in that span.
