The British driver, who leads the championship, beat Max Verstappen by 0.323 seconds, setting an impressive time in his last attempt of Q3. His McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who is his main competitor in the championship, qualified in fifth place, giving Norris an excellent opportunity to advance towards his first world title in Saturday night’s race. Norris, who had expressed doubts about McLaren’s chances on the street circuit, confessed that he did not expect to fight for pole when he woke up and saw the rain.Norris was surprised by the performance of his McLaren on a surface with so little grip.
