Lando Norris Surprises in Las Vegas Qualifying: From Nap to Pole Position

Lando Norris starred in an unexpected performance in the qualifying of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, securing the pole position in rainy conditions, after a nap prior to the session. The British driver, who leads the championship, beat Max Verstappen by 0.323 seconds, setting an impressive time in his last attempt of Q3. His McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who is his main competitor in the championship, qualified in fifth place, giving Norris an excellent opportunity to advance towards his first world title in Saturday night’s race. Norris, who had expressed doubts about McLaren’s chances on the street circuit, confessed that he did not expect to fight for pole when he woke up and saw the rain.

To be honest, I was taking a quick nap before qualifying and was hoping it would be dry, but I woke up and saw it was raining. I thought, ‘oh, shit, this isn’t going to go well’, but nobody has driven here before in the rain and it’s difficult to know what to expect.

Norris was surprised by the performance of his McLaren on a surface with so little grip. Norris will start the race ahead of Verstappen’s Red Bull and Carlos Sainz’s Williams, but warned that he is not confident despite his outstanding performance in qualifying. The driver admitted that he has doubts about the race pace and tire strategy, as he hasn’t done many consecutive laps in practice. Despite these unknowns, Norris feels optimistic and expects a close competition with Verstappen and Sainz. The driver is in the best possible position for the race, and is satisfied with his performance so far.
