WNBA Proposal: Increased Revenue Sharing and Historic Salaries

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has presented a new collective bargaining agreement that promises to revolutionize the league. According to sources close to the situation, this agreement would include an unprecedented revenue sharing system and maximum salaries. The proposal, presented in recent meetings, contemplates that more than one player per team could access a salary exceeding $1.1 million, with annual increases. In addition, a minimum salary of more than $220,000 and an average salary exceeding $460,000 are established. These figures would be effective from the first year of the agreement for more than 180 players, and are expected to increase over the term of the agreement. The current collective bargaining agreement expired on October 31st, but the WNBA and the players’ union agreed to extend negotiations until November 30th to reach an agreement that significantly benefits the players in terms of salary. The players exercised their right to terminate the current agreement last year, seeking, among other things, a greater distribution of income, higher salaries, better benefits, and a more flexible salary cap. In 2019, at the end of the previous agreement, both parties agreed to a 60-day extension, resulting in the ratification of a new agreement in January 2020.
