A 53-year-old British man, identified as Paul Doyle, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, following an incident in which his vehicle hit a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating the Premier League championship.

Prosecutor Sarah Hammond confirmed the accusations, which also include dangerous driving and other charges.

According to the police, 79 people were injured in the incident, with at least 50 receiving hospital treatment. The ages of the injured range from 9 to 78 years old. Seven people remain hospitalized in stable condition.

The celebration of Liverpool’s twentieth title turned into tragedy when the driver veered into a street full of fans.

The police believe Doyle evaded a roadblock by following an ambulance responding to a report of a person in cardiac arrest.

Eyewitness videos show shocking scenes, with the car hitting and throwing a person wrapped in a Liverpool flag into the air, before veering into the crowd.

Merseyside Police have stated that the driver is believed to have acted alone and that they do not suspect terrorism.
