McTominay Shines in Italy: MVP and Serie A Champion

Scott McTominay proved his worth after leaving Manchester United, culminating his first season in Italy with the Serie A title and the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

The Scottish midfielder capped a sensational debut season in Italy with the crucial opening goal in Napoli’s 2-0 victory over Cagliari on Friday, securing the Serie A championship by a single point over Inter Milan.

McTominay collapsed on the field, visibly emotional, when the match ended.

“For me, coming and experiencing this is a dream,” said McTominay.

After ending his 22-year association with Manchester United with a £25 million move to Napoli last summer, the 28-year-old scored 12 goals in Serie A, being honored as the player of the season after Friday’s final whistle.

Earlier this month, Napoli manager Antonio Conte praised McTominay’s rise, highlighting his growing maturity and influence since leaving Manchester United.

“He feels more complete and knowledgeable, and he is reaching a key stage in his career where he needs to decide his direction. He never had a leading role at Manchester United, while here we gave him one,” Conte stated.

“He has worked hard and now he is a complete player”.

Napoli’s other big signing of the summer, Romelu Lukaku, who arrived from Chelsea, scored Napoli’s second goal against Cagliari, adding his 14th goal of the season and 10 assists, leading the league in this aspect.

Conte, who made the signing of Lukaku and McTominay his priority when he joined Napoli last summer, was named Serie A Coach of the Year.

The other Serie A awards went to Mile Svilar (Roma goalkeeper), Alessandro Bastoni (Inter defender), Tijjani Reijnders (AC Milan midfielder), and Mateo Retegui (Atalanta forward). Nico Paz, Como forward, was named the best under-23 player.
