Shaw Questions Manchester United’s Performance After Defeat to Tottenham
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has expressed his deep disappointment following the “damaging” defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final. Shaw urged his teammates to question their worth to the club, after a season he described as unacceptable for an institution like Manchester United.
The 1-0 defeat to Tottenham worsened a difficult campaign for United, meaning there will be no European football at Old Trafford next season, something that has only happened for the second time in 35 years.
It’s difficult to put the season into words, but I think for a club like Manchester United, it’s really not good enough. I think definitely myself, and I think all of us need to question tonight. Are we good enough to be here? Because this club, this season, it’s not acceptable. We know that and it’s down to us.

In an emotional interview, Shaw described the defeat as “extremely damaging” and apologized to the fans who have supported the team during their worst season since relegation to the second division in 1974.
Despite requesting significant changes in the summer, Shaw insisted that coach Ruben Amorim should remain in charge of the team. The Portuguese coach offered his resignation without compensation after the defeat, but Shaw believes he is still the right man for the job.
I think there are many things that need to be changed. I think that’s why Ruben is the right person 100%. He knows and can see day after day at the club, not just on the field but off it, throughout the club. The standards, the mentality, I think he sees it all. I think he knows what needs to be changed.
