Mason Mount Seeks Redemption in the Europa League After a Difficult Start at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has shared his experiences about the complicated start to his career at the club, as he prepares to leave behind two years marked by injuries and fight to win the Europa League.

Mount could start against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, having been included in the starting eleven in three of the last four matches.

Mount’s return has been timely. Injuries have limited his participation to just 45 appearances since joining United from Chelsea in 2023, in a £60 million deal. He has completed the full 90 minutes on only one occasion.

Mount acknowledges that his time at Old Trafford has been “tough”, but now, recovered and with valuable minutes under his belt, he hopes to crown his return with a winner’s medal in the Europa League.

I’ve had many days at Carrington (United’s training ground) sitting on the treatment table, where I want to be training. I’ve been in the stands watching matches where I want to be playing. I gave it my all to continue with my rehabilitation and try to get back as soon as possible.

The player has highlighted that he has learned a lot from these difficult moments and that now, feeling better, he appreciates his situation more.

Mount, who averaged nearly 50 games per season in his four years at Chelsea, suffered an injury in his second match with United, forcing him to spend long periods off the pitch, both this season and the previous one.

He missed four months of last season due to a calf problem and another three months of this season with a hamstring injury. His only full match to date was in the League Cup defeat to Newcastle in November 2023.

Despite his prolonged absences, both former coach Erik ten Hag and current coach Ruben Amorim have considered Mount an important part of the team.

He backed this up with two crucial goals in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Club.

Injuries are something I obviously didn’t see coming. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve stayed very focused throughout that time. I always had the end goal in mind that it would go well and something would happen and I would have a moment where I would score some goals or something would happen.

The player has stated that it has not been easy to be off the field, watching the matches from the stands, but he has persevered and now appreciates the support of the fans.

The arrival of Mount at United generated high expectations. He was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2021 and played a key role in the European Championship final with England the same year.

The pressure on his shoulders increased when wearing the iconic number 7 jersey, used by club legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The number 7 weighed on other players like Ángel Di María and Alexis Sánchez, but Mount is willing to take on the challenge of living up to its history.

It was a huge honor. Obviously, I knew before joining what legends have worn the shirt and what it means for the club. As soon as I knew there was a possibility of wearing it, I would never turn it down. I always wanted to take that opportunity.

No solo Mount busca un impulso en Bilbao.

United has already secured its worst position in the Premier League and winning the Europa League would secure a place in the Champions League and provide vital funds for the team’s renovation in the summer.

Mount also believes that winning his first trophy under Amorim’s management would provide a platform to improve next season.

I feel like we’re close. It’s small details here and there in the games. Especially in the Premier League. If the small details aren’t right, you can get punished. Sometimes it can be devastating. In the Premier League it’s fine margins.

Mount added that the team is working to correct those details and that winning trophies increases the confidence and unity of the group. The goal is to finish the season positively and prepare for the next season.

The player concluded by saying that, as a team, they try to ignore the external noise and focus on the Europa League, which represents an opportunity to secure a place in the Champions League and finish a difficult season on a positive note.
