Louis Rees-Zammit returns to the Wales national team this autumn, marking his return to rugby after a hiatus in which he pursued his dream in the NFL. The return of Rees-Zammit comes two years after his last participation with Wales, after signing a contract with the NFL through its International Player Pathway (IPP) program. This led him to be part of the training teams of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 24-year-old player decided to return to rugby in August, signing a one-season contract with the Bristol Bears. During his absence, Wales has suffered a streak of 18 consecutive losses, from the 2023 Rugby World Cup to a test match in Japan in July. This period also saw the departure of coach Warren Gatland, with Steve Tandy now in charge.

Rees-Zammit is part of a 39-player squad that includes five debutants: prop Danny Southworth, hooker Brodie Coghlan, second row James Fender, flanker Morgan Morse and center Louis Hennessey. Also included is Rhys Carre, the Saracens prop. Tandy commented on the selection: “It’s been very exciting to go through the whole process and realize how many good players we have. We have come to the selection decision, with which we are very happy. There is a very good mix of young people coming in, mixed with some experience as well. But the overall feeling is really exciting and I’m looking forward to having the guys in camp on Monday.”

A notable absence is that of second row Will Rowlands, who announced his retirement from international rugby on Tuesday, ending a career with Wales that saw him win 41 matches.

Will has been a great servant to the game in Welsh rugby. He has been an exceptional player and a great human being in the environment.
