Leylah Fernandez Conquers the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez was crowned champion of the Japan Open WTA this Sunday, after defeating young prospect Tereza Valentova in a close final.

Fernandez, who was facing his eighth career final, demonstrated his skill on the court, securing his fifth individual title.

The Canadian, runner-up at the US Open in 2021, dominated the first set with a resounding 6-0. Valentova, for her part, recovered in the second set, managing to tie the score after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

The decisive set saw Fernandez, currently ranked 27th in the world, convert a crucial break in the fourth game. Despite the strong resistance from the Czech player, Fernandez maintained her lead to secure the victory.

This triumph marks the second title of the season for Fernandez, who previously won the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
