A Hamburger SV fan suffered life-threatening injuries and 19 others were seriously injured during celebrations after the team’s return to the Bundesliga, local fire services reported on Sunday.
The Hamburg Fire Department deployed a “major emergency response” to assist Hamburg fans celebrating promotion on Saturday, as thousands of supporters stormed the pitch.
A total of 44 followers required medical attention, including 25 who were transferred to local hospitals, of whom five had minor injuries.
Hamburg secured their long-awaited return to the top flight with a 6-1 victory over Ulm, securing their place in the top two of the German second division and automatic promotion to the Bundesliga.
The club, known as “der Dino”, was the last surviving member of the Bundesliga that had played every season since its formation in 1963, until its relegation in 2018.
