Evan Bouchard: A Night to Forget, but with Hope

In a game that will be marked in his career, Evan Bouchard, defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers, had a performance below his capabilities against the New York Islanders. Individual errors cost two goals against, as well as several turnovers that generated clear scoring opportunities for the opposing team.

I have to improve that. You learn from this, obviously there’s a lot to learn. Part of the game is to forget the good and the bad, so move on, be ready for the next game.

However, in this match, the mistakes were more evident than his successes. His defense partner, Mattias Ekholm, came to his defense, highlighting Bouchard’s ability to overcome adversity and his potential to make unexpected plays.

I know people can be hard on him for mistakes, but you also have to look at the positive side of what he brings. I’m sure he knows he could have made other decisions tonight, but I know there are other games and you saw the other night when he just bulldozes through their forwards and makes everyone look silly and things you wouldn’t even think about. I would be careful criticizing him because that’s just him.

One of the most notorious errors occurred in the first period, when Bouchard lost the puck in the neutral zone, allowing Mat Barzal to score a goal. In the second period, on a power play for Edmonton, Bouchard was beaten by Bo Horvat, who scored a shorthanded goal.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch admitted he expected more from Bouchard, but is confident in his ability to bounce back.

We can’t just accept that. Mistakes happen, but we have to address what kind of mistakes are happening. Evan is a fantastic player, one of the best in the league, certainly one of the best defensemen in the NHL. Tonight was not his night, but I’ve always seen him react and play much better after games like this.
