The Houston Astros are facing a new change in their pitching rotation, less than a week before the return of Lance McCullers Jr., who was absent for more than two years.

Hayden Wesneski has been placed on the injured list.

Wesneski was sent to the injured list due to right elbow discomfort. Logan VanWey was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his place.

The injured list designation was made retroactive to Wednesday, a day after Wesneski allowed four runs, the most of the season, on five hits in four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wesneski, 27, is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts this season.

In his four seasons in the Major Leagues, Wesneski has a 10-16 record with a 4.01 ERA in 74 appearances (28 starts).

With McCullers still regaining his form and Wesneski out of action, the Astros are likely to rely more on their bullpen, which before Saturday had the third-best ERA in MLB at 2.73.

VanWey, 26, made his mark in the bullpen earlier this season, after making his major league debut on April 11. He had an ERA of 1.35 in six appearances, despite allowing 11 hits with one walk in 6 2/3 innings.
