The current champion, Iga Swiatek, suffered an unexpected defeat at the Italian Open. The Polish tennis player, number two in the world, fell to the American Danielle Collins in the round of 32, with a score of 6-1 and 7-5.
The match, played on Saturday, saw Collins dominate the first set, reaching a 5-0 lead before Swiatek managed to add a game.
Although the first set was clearly favorable for Collins, the second set remained even until 4-4. Finally, Collins, runner-up of the Australian Open in 2022, secured the victory in one hour and 44 minutes.
Swiatek, who had a favorable 7-1 record against Collins before this match, has not managed to win a tournament in almost a year.
