Cameron Green: The New Australian Cricket Promise Ready for Debut

The 21-year-old allrounder from Western Australia, Cameron Green, is ready to make his debut for Australia at the Adelaide Oval. His arrival generates great expectation and is one of the most anticipated debuts in recent times.

Outstanding Career in First-Class Cricket

Green’s first-class cricket career has been outstanding. He has five centuries in 21 matches, including a top score of 197 runs early in the season against New South Wales. His batting average is 55.04. In a match against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, he demonstrated his potential with the bat, scoring 87 and 121 runs, batting at positions 8 and 9. That was also the last match in which he bowled for a year. With the ball, he averages 21.72 runs for his 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, against whom he also achieved his best figures of 6 for 30 in 2018. His career in the white-ball format does not stand out as much, although he debuted in ODIs a couple of weeks ago. However, that’s only from a handful of matches: nine in List A and T20.

Overcoming the Fear of Injury

Green suffered a blow to the head from a Jasprit Bumrah delivery at the SCG. He had to leave the field and was substituted due to concussion. Fortunately, the blow did not cause major damage and it seems he will be able to comply with the protocols to debut.

The Allrounder Australia Needs?

Green, could be the allrounder that Australia has been looking for, although cautiously. He has had bowling restrictions due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. This season he has not bowled more than eight overs in a day in match conditions. However, he has demonstrated his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggested that the bowling restrictions will be relaxed. “I think he’ll bowl a few more than that, once you’re selected in a test match, you’re ready to play. That being said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

A Debut That Arrives Sooner Than Expected

In a way, yes. In fact, a few weeks ago it seemed unlikely that he would enter the starting eleven at the beginning of the series, despite having been named in the expanded squad. However, injuries to Warner and Pucovksi have led to changes in the batting order, opening up an opportunity in the number 6 position. This does not mean that Green does not deserve it. Based on his current form, it could be said that he is among the top six batsmen in Australia.
