In the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, Aryna Sabalenka, current US Open champion, continues her dominance. On Friday, the Belarusian tennis player extended her winning streak in Wuhan to 20 matches, after defeating Elena Rybakina, eighth seed, with a score of 6-3 and 6-3, securing her place in the semifinals.
Sabalenka, who already won the Wuhan Open title in 2018, 2019 and last year, once again demonstrated her superiority on the court.
In a match that lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes, the world number one broke Rybakina’s serve on three occasions, thus advancing to the semifinals for the eleventh time this season. At the end of the match, Sabalenka thanked the audience with gestures.
Coco Gauff, the third seed, also comfortably advanced to the semifinals, achieving a victory with a score of 6-3 and 6-0 over Laura Siegemund.
Gauff will seek to reach the final after her defeat in the China Open semifinals last week.
In the next phase, Gauff will face Iga Swiatek or Jasmine Paolini.
For her part, Sabalenka will face Jessica Pegula, sixth seed, who previously had to play a third set for the seventh consecutive time. Pegula came back from the first set, winning with partials of 2-6, 6-0 and 6-3 against Katerina Siniakova.
Pegula comes to this match after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova and Hailey Baptiste.
