George Russell: Ready to Fight for the World Championship

Following his resounding victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, Mercedes driver George Russell expressed his confidence in being ready to compete for the world title. This victory represents Russell’s fifth in his career and the second this season, following his triumph at the Canadian Grand Prix in June. The Singapore circuit, where Russell suffered an accident two years ago while seeking victory in the final laps, witnessed his remarkable performance. Russell believes this performance is clear evidence of his evolution as a driver.

I am a very different driver than I was a couple of years ago, and I feel more complete, with more confidence. I know exactly what I need to do in every situation.

Russell admitted that, although he felt nervous before the race, he did not experience additional pressure. For him, it was simply another race, and he was sure he had the opportunity to win.

Since his arrival at Mercedes in 2022, Russell has not had a car capable of fighting for championships. Despite this, in his three seasons as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate, he was only two points behind the seven-time champion. Currently, he leads his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli by 149 points after 18 races. Russell believes he has matured as a driver in the last two years and would make the most of a car capable of achieving consistent victories throughout a season.

I think it comes with experience, knowing how to maximize each situation. Probably, a couple of years ago, I was driving a bit more tense and, probably, I was pushing too hard in circumstances where I shouldn’t have.

Russell also commented that he feels more relaxed and that given the adverse weather conditions before the race, he chose not to stress, understanding that it was the same for everyone.
