Allen Iverson Reveals the Lowest Point of His Life: The Divorce

In a recent interview on “First Take”, Allen Iverson, NBA legend, shared details about the most difficult moment of his life, revealed in his new memoir “Misunderstood”. Surprisingly, this critical point was not related to his successful basketball career.

It was self-inflicted. But it was when Tawanna divorced me.

Iverson and Tawanna Turner married in 2001, coinciding with Iverson’s rise to fame. Their marriage, like his career, had ups and downs. The couple separated in 2008 and the divorce was finalized in 2013, the year Iverson announced his retirement from basketball. Iverson explained that this moment marked his lowest point and led him to deep personal reflection. He recalled the sadness of that moment, visualizing the legal process. However, after the divorce, Iverson and Turner resumed their relationship. When asked how he got Tawanna back, Iverson answered honestly. During this process of introspection and reconstruction, Iverson, now 50 years old, recognized that alcoholism was a significant problem. Divorce, the end of his career, and his youthful experiences contributed to this situation.

It’s a plethora of things. Ultimately, when you evaluate your maturity and what’s important and what you mean to your family, friends, and the world, I just thought about the way I was supposed to be in life. And I didn’t see how [alcohol] was helping in anything. I could only think of negative experiences.

Iverson also reflected on his influence on the new generations of NBA players.

I made many of them feel comfortable in their own skin and feel that they can express themselves. I love everything that is happening with our league and the improvement of the younger players. We will never lack superstars.
