Sergio Busquets Announces Retirement and Future Plans

Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets revealed his plans to take a break from soccer after announcing his retirement at the end of the 2025 MLS season, before starting a coaching career. Busquets was honored in a ceremony at Chase Stadium after Inter Miami’s 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday.

“I think in the future, yes [I would like to be a coach], but for now I prefer to take a break,” Busquets told reporters. “It’s a long time, with hardly any weekends. Like any footballer, obviously, playing for the national team and everything gives you a plus, but you also have less time.”

Busquets explained that he wants to spend more time with his family, travel, and watch football from a different perspective. The soccer player, who debuted with Barcelona in 2008, also mentioned that the decision to retire is based on his desire to end stages well and close stories properly.

Busquets, who has been a pillar at Barcelona, the Spanish national team, and Inter Miami, stated that he feels physically well, but believes that it is the right time to retire, both physically and mentally. Busquets already made history with Inter Miami, being part of the team that lifted the Leagues Cup 2023 trophy and the Supporters’ Shield 2024, in addition to setting a record for points in a league season. Although the MLS regular season concludes on October 18, Inter Miami has qualified for the playoffs, guaranteeing more matches for the 37-year-old player. Currently, Inter Miami is in third place in the Eastern Conference with 59 points in 32 matches.
