American golfer Billy Horschel will undergo hip surgery next week, the player himself announced on Tuesday, representing a setback for his aspirations to participate in this year’s Ryder Cup.

Horschel, currently ranked 24th in the World Golf Ranking, was forced to withdraw from the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a PGA Tour team event, two weeks ago due to an injury.

The decision to undergo surgery was made in Colorado.

It’s an unfortunate situation with so many important events remaining on the schedule, but this is a preventative measure. I am already looking forward to starting rehabilitation, getting back to practice, and hopefully returning to the golf course in late summer or early fall.

Horschel, who was part of the winning Presidents Cup team in 2022, has achieved two top 10 finishes in 12 events this year and is ranked 16th in the U.S. Ryder Cup points standings.

The top six players on the points list after the BMW Championship, to be held on August 17, will make the team. Keegan Bradley will complete the 12-player team with six captain’s picks.

The Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place from September 26 to 28 at Bethpage Black, New York.
