Dwayne Johnson Transforms to Play Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson immersed himself in a process of physical and mental transformation to bring Mark Kerr, a mixed martial arts legend, to life in the film “The Smashing Machine.” The actor revealed details about the arduous work and dedication that this challenging role entailed.
During an interview, Johnson shared his impressions of the reaction of Bryce, Mark Kerr’s son, upon seeing the film: “Dad, he walks like you. He looks like you. He talks like you.” These words were a clear sign of Johnson’s successful transformation into the character.

Johnson met with Kerr around 1997, and both witnessed the increase in deaths of wrestlers and professional fighters due to drugs. “I just wanted to write my own love letter to the men who were my friends and who I lost. And also to Mark,” said Johnson.
To achieve the physical transformation, Johnson had to significantly increase his muscle mass. The actor revealed that he gained around 30 pounds for the role, focusing on the type of musculature and strength that characterizes MMA fighters.
Johnson trained at an MMA camp, working with professional coaches and fighters to perfect his moves and fighting style.The actor shared on social media the beginning of his training camp, describing the process as “a very humble, intense and motivating journey”.
In a fight scene, Johnson took a real hit, demonstrating his commitment to the character’s authenticity and the film.
Safdie focused on the importance of authenticity in the film and the filming of the scenes. The scenes between Kerr and his ex-wife, Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt, were treated as their own combats. These scenes turned out to be emotionally intense for Johnson.
Johnson revealed that he was inspired by his parents’ discussions during his childhood to play the role. The actor entered the role with deep respect for MMA, and the final result validated his performance.
