McIlroy Criticizes Fan Behavior at Tournament

Golfer Rory McIlroy expressed his discontent with the behavior of the fans during the tournament, calling it unacceptable. After Europe’s 15-13 victory over the United States, McIlroy pointed out that the fans should have supported their own players instead of insulting the Europeans.

I don’t think we should accept that in golf. Golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen this week.

During the three days of competition, McIlroy was subjected to insults and taunts, some directed at his wife and family, and others while he was preparing to hit the ball. This caused delays and forced the PGA of America to increase security. The golfer commented on the large police and security presence, noting that although there were no physical altercations, the language used and the behavior were unacceptable. On Saturday, McIlroy played alongside Shane Lowry, and both suffered constant verbal abuse. Two people were ejected from the course, and the PGA of America reinforced security and added warning signs about the behavior of the fans. Although there were fewer incidents on Sunday, McIlroy continued to be the target of fans during his match with Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy lamented that the fans did not support their players, but instead focused on insulting him. Justin Thomas, who played against McIlroy and Lowry on Saturday, acknowledged the insults directed at the European players, expressing his regret for the situation. A video on social media showed Lowry being held back by his caddie after a fan said something before McIlroy hit his drive on Saturday. Another video showed McIlroy walking with his wife, Erica, when a beer was thrown in her direction, hitting her. Lowry highlighted McIlroy’s wife’s unconditional support, despite the abuse she received. McIlroy revealed that he responded to the fans impulsively, and that he felt “very satisfying” to tell a fan to shut up. McIlroy concluded by stating that, despite the difficult week, the team handled the situation with class and composure, and ultimately silenced the critics with their performance.
