Tiafoe and Shapovalov Surprise at the Japan Open
Tokyo – The Japan Open witnessed surprises in its first round, with two major seeds falling to their rivals.
Frances Tiafoe, eighth seed, suffered a defeat against qualifier Marton Fucsovics, who managed to win with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Tiafoe showed difficulties with his serve during the match and, after Fucsovics’ victory, reacted with frustration, smashing his racket against the court.
This defeat represents the fourth consecutive for the American tennis player, who currently holds the number 29 position in the ranking.
In the next round, Fucsovics will face the winner of the match between Jordan Thompson and Brandon Nakashima.
On the other hand, Denis Shapovalov, seventh seed, was also eliminated from the tournament after losing 7-5, 6-3 to Daniel Altmaier. Altmaier will face the winner of the match between Damir Dzumhur and Aleksandar Vukic in the next round.
