Oscar Collazo Retains World Titles After Controversial Stoppage

Puerto Rican boxer Oscar Collazo successfully defended his WBO and WBA light flyweight titles, defeating Jayson Vayson by technical knockout in the seventh round. The fight, which took place on Saturday, ended unexpectedly when Vayson’s corner stopped the fight. The match remained competitive until the moment of the stoppage. Vayson, despite having been knocked down in the first round, remained aggressive against Collazo. In the fourth round, Vayson focused his attacks on Collazo’s body, who responded with combinations that cornered his opponent in rounds six and seven. Vayson’s corner’s decision to stop the fight generated debate, as the boxer did not seem to be in an obvious situation of danger.

They thought I was groggy, but I wanted to keep fighting. Of course, I respect the corner’s decision for the boxer’s safety. I felt the blows on my body, but I thought I could handle it.

Collazo, who represents Puerto Rico, achieved his third consecutive victory by the quick route and has been champion since 2023. He conquered the WBO title by defeating Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023 and added the WBA title in 2024, after knocking out Knockout CP Freshmart in November of the same year.

I think the stoppage was good. I was pressing, picking my shots. The seventh round was where we were going to launch and launch, and we got the stoppage. In the last three rounds I was wearing him down. I knew I was going to get it. I applied the pressure as I wanted. I saw that he was getting tired and I wanted to pick my shots in that round and it was stopped.

Gabriela Fundora Dominates in the Co-Main Event

In the co-main event, undisputed women’s flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora defeated Alexas Kubicki by technical knockout in the seventh round, demonstrating clear superiority. Kubicki replaced the Argentinian Ayelen “Piru” Granadino, who apparently couldn’t get the visa to enter the United States. Fundora set his pace from the start, connecting effective combinations on Kubicki, who tried to resist his rival’s attacks.
