Piastri Seeks Recovery After Qualifying Accident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

The championship leader, Oscar Piastri, prepares for a recovery race after an unexpected accident that took him out of qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Piastri, who leads his teammate Lando Norris by 31 points in the championship, suffered a slide at Turn 4 during the Q3 session, an uncommon error for the driver. Despite the adverse weather conditions, with strong winds and rain, Piastri did not seek excuses.

I think I was a lot happier today, but I think I tried a little too much in Turn 3,” Piastri told reporters. “I haven’t looked at what I did differently, because I didn’t feel like I did much differently, but a small detail can make a big difference. So yeah, obviously disappointed with my performance.

Oscar Piastri partirá noveno en la parrilla el domingo, su peor posición de salida desde el Gran Premio de México de 2024, donde arrancó en el puesto 17.
Piastri will start from ninth on the grid on Sunday, his worst starting position since the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix, where he started in 17th place. One of the few consolations for Piastri is that Lando Norris couldn’t capitalize on the situation, finishing in seventh position. This means that the McLaren drivers will have to work hard to advance in a race that promises a lot of excitement.

There are opportunities on Sunday, but I am more disappointed… it could also be argued that it was a good opportunity to progress, but what’s done is done and I will try to score some points tomorrow.

Reflecting on the lack of practice over the weekend, Piastri added: “Not many people have done long runs this weekend, so the strategy is a bit up in the air, that gives us opportunities, so we’ll have to wait and see.” Max Verstappen of Red Bull seems to be the favorite for the victory, after qualifying in pole position, with Carlos Sainz of Williams in second place and Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls in third.
