HENDERSON, Nev. – A’ja Wilson, star of the Las Vegas Aces, has been nominated as one of the five finalists for the WNBA MVP award.
This nomination puts Wilson in a privileged position to become the first player to win the award four times.
The other MVP candidates
Along with Wilson, the other finalists are:
- Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx)
- Allisha Gray (Atlanta Dream)
- Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever)
- Alyssa Thomas (Phoenix Mercury)
The award, which is voted on by a panel of media, will be announced on Sunday.
In the past season, Wilson joined Cynthia Cooper, from the 1997 Houston Comets, as the only players to be unanimously selected MVP. This tied her with Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson, who have also won the award three times.
Wilson already won the award in 2020 and 2022. The other four finalists have not yet won the MVP award.
Wilson led the WNBA with an average of 23.4 points and 2.3 blocks per game for the Aces, who were the second-best team in the league.
Collier, for her part, was the star player of the league’s best team, averaging 22.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
