Laura Villars Enters the Race for FIA Presidency
Swiss driver Laura Villars has surprised the motorsport world by announcing her candidacy for the presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Villars, 28, becomes the first woman and the youngest person to run for the position. The December election will pit Villars against current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and American motorsports official Tim Meyer. The news of Villars’ candidacy took many by surprise, as his intention to run had not been publicly anticipated. Villars, who was not widely known in the world of motorsport before this announcement, has expressed her confidence in her candidacy. “I have everything prepared, the whole program, the whole team, which makes me very confident for this presidency,” Villars declared. Villars has not yet submitted the necessary documentation to detail his team, but has until October 24 to do so. The candidate hopes that her youth will bring a different perspective to that of Ben Sulayem, 63, and Meyer, 59. Villars has emphasized her desire to renew and refresh the FIA, bringing a new vision based on her experience in the world of motorsport.Villars’ agenda includes empowering clubs, increasing transparency in governance, and improving the “Women in Motorsport” program. It also seeks to eliminate the barriers faced by young drivers, both men and women, when starting their careers. The FIA presidency is decided by a vote of the member clubs, which represent the national motorsport organizations from around the world. The elections resemble political campaigns, where candidates seek support before the vote. Villars claims to have the support of clubs from all over the world, as well as an experienced team. The FIA vote will take place on December 12.I want to renew and refresh the FIA. I bring a new vision. I have been in motorsport all my life.
