FC Barcelona: Salary Cap Suffers Significant Reduction

The FC Barcelona’s spending limit has experienced a notable decrease, standing at 351 million euros, which represents a reduction of 112 million euros since last winter. In contrast, Real Madrid has seen an increase in its limit, reaching 761 million euros, according to data provided by LaLiga. These squad cost limits, released after each transfer period, determine the maximum amount each club can allocate to first-team players, coaching staff, reserve teams, and youth players. During a presentation, LaLiga reported that, while Real Madrid’s limit, the highest in the league, grew from 754 million to 761 million euros, Barça’s decreased from 463 million to 351 million euros. LaLiga attributed this situation to the refusal of Barcelona’s auditors to include, for the time being, 100 million euros in revenue from the sale of VIP boxes at the Spotify Camp Nou, which is being remodeled, in the club’s most recent accounts. Barcelona has faced problems registering its new signings within the salary limits set by LaLiga in recent seasons.

“The difference of 112 million coincides with the 100 million of the VIP boxes,” explained Javier Gómez, general director of LaLiga. “There was an auditor [from Barça] who said yes, and then the current one said no. That is the cause.”

The club’s return to Camp Nou has been delayed, and the team will play this weekend’s LaLiga match against Getafe at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, which has a capacity of 6,000 spectators, after having hosted Valencia there the previous weekend. Gómez expressed his confidence that the club will resolve this situation, whether with the VIP boxes or in another way. “They will overcome their problems, I am 100% sure… Barcelona is still functioning, even without its stadium, where they are losing a lot of income.”

Gómez indicated that LaLiga cannot confirm whether the 100 million euros in VIP box revenue will be added to the club’s spending limit once the team returns to play at the Camp Nou. The league’s third-highest spending limit is that of Atlético de Madrid, with 327 million euros, while the lowest is that of Sevilla, affected by not qualifying for European competitions in recent seasons, with 22 million euros.
