Trent Alexander-Arnold Suffers Injury in Champions League Match

The player Trent Alexander-Arnold had to be substituted five minutes after the Champions League match between Real Madrid and Marseille began, due to an injury. The right-back collapsed on the pitch, clutching his thigh, after a play in which he had possession of the ball at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Alexander-Arnold, who arrived at Real Madrid from Liverpool during the summer, was replaced by the team captain, Dani Carvajal. Carvajal was later sent off in the 72nd minute, but Madrid managed to come back and win 2-1 thanks to two goals from Kylian Mbappé.

The English international has started in three of Madrid’s five matches across all competitions this season, with Carvajal being the preferred option in the other two.

“It’s a very good competition [between the two players]”, commented coach Xabi Alonso last month. “I like having that in each position, two players who want to show what they can do. It’s really good for the team.”

Alexander-Arnold’s teammate in the English national team, Jude Bellingham, returned to Madrid’s squad for the match against Marseille for the first time this season, after undergoing shoulder surgery in July. However, Bellingham remained on the bench as Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a victory.
