MIAMI – The Detroit Tigers have activated right-handed pitcher José Urquidy, who hasn’t played in the Major Leagues since 2023, taking him off the injured list this Friday.

Urquidy, 30 years old, played his first five seasons with the Houston Astros, participating in 79 games, 70 of them as a starter. In addition, he accumulated 46⅔ innings in 15 postseason appearances.

The last time Urquidy pitched in the majors was in the 2023 American League Championship Series, when the Astros were eliminated by the Texas Rangers. In June 2024, he underwent surgery on his right elbow.

After that season, the Astros placed Urquidy on waivers, and he signed a one-year contract with the Tigers. Urquidy participated in 10 rehabilitation games in the minor leagues with the Tigers before his call-up.

To make room for Urquidy, the Tigers placed Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list due to neck stiffness.
