Temporary Closure of the “Félix Sánchez” Olympic Stadium for Renovation Works

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has announced the temporary closure of the “Félix Sánchez” Olympic Stadium for public activities involving the use of the field or track. This measure is due to the ongoing reconstruction work, preparing for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026. The Ministry has issued a statement explaining that the uses permitted until now have been adjusted to a strict schedule, designed in collaboration with the engineers and technicians in charge of the installation. It is recognized that the stadium is the only facility of its kind available in the country.

The current work schedule only contemplates one available space that has been reserved well in advance for a presentation by the Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny

In addition, the celebration of the religious activity “Battle of Faith” has been authorized on January 1st, on the condition that the public only accesses the grandstand area, keeping the work areas on the track isolated.

Remodeling Details

The current work schedule includes the preparation of the ground for the installation of the track and modern athletics equipment. Currently, the work focuses on achieving category one qualification, which will allow the country to host world-class athletics events. In the football field, located in the central part of the facility, interventions will also be carried out to install the necessary equipment for the athletics competitions. This area is used for various athletics modalities. The Ministry of Sports has reiterated that no new authorizations have been granted for the use of the Olympic Stadium, apart from those previously approved according to the schedule of technicians and engineers. Once the works are completed, the Olympic Stadium will be available to the Organizing Committee of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games for the event, which will be held from July 24 to August 8, 2026, as well as for the tests and certifications of World Athletics.
