Jets Cut Xavier Gipson After Costly Error

The New York Jets have decided to release Xavier Gipson after his mistake on the punt return during Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The news was confirmed this Wednesday. After the Steelers cut the Jets’ lead to 26-24 in the final quarter, Kenneth Gainwell forced a fumble from Gipson on the kickoff, the first turnover of the game. Aaron Rodgers took advantage of the situation two plays later, throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Austin III, putting the Steelers up 31-26 with 14:07 remaining on the clock. The Steelers finally clinched the victory with a 60-yard field goal by Chris Boswell, with a final score of 34-32.

“We can’t afford turnovers. We have to be a more disciplined team… That’s something that will be addressed. You won’t be on the field with this team if you’re going to make us lose games,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said on Sunday.

Gipson arrived at the Jets as a free agent in 2023. As a wide receiver, he accumulated 27 receptions for 268 yards and one touchdown in his career. In Sunday’s loss, he only participated in special teams.
