Bobby Witt Jr. Leaves Game with Lower Back Spasms

Kansas City, Mo. – Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was forced to leave Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins due to lower back spasms. Witt Jr. left the game in the seventh inning, in the Royals’ 2-1 victory. The player made two defensive plays in the top of the sixth inning, but subsequently felt discomfort.

“It happened in that at-bat before we took him out,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He talked to the trainer, Kyle Turner. While he was sitting, it got worse.”

With the Royals leading 2-1, Witt Jr. was replaced by Nick Loftin, who covered third base while Maikel Garcia moved to the shortstop position. Manager Quatraro did not offer a prognosis on Witt Jr.’s recovery time.

“At this point, we just think it’s lower back spasms,” Quatraro added. “He locked up pretty good.”
