In an exciting WNBA matchup, the New York Liberty showcased their strength by defeating the Washington Mystics with a score of 89-63, despite facing new injuries in their roster. The absence of Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones, who were unable to participate in the game, forced Breanna Stewart, Emma Meesseman, and Marine Johannes to take on leading roles. These players led the Liberty to a resounding victory that solidifies their position in fifth place in the standings, as the WNBA regular season approaches its final phase. Ionescu suffered a left toe injury during Wednesday’s training, while Jones felt ill on Thursday morning, being added late to the injury report. The New York team also had the absences of Natasha Cloud (broken nose) and Nyara Sabally (knee), which reduced their group of available players to only eight at the start of the game.

Welcome to the 2025 New York Liberty. It’s been crazy.

Breanna Stewart, who returned on Monday after missing 13 games due to a bone contusion in her right knee, was still under minute restriction, playing only 24 minutes. Even so, she managed to score 12 points and grab 9 rebounds. Meesseman led the team with 15 points, while Johannes contributed 14, keeping the Liberty seven games behind the Minnesota Lynx, league leaders. Washington first-year coach Sydney Johnson learned of the Liberty stars’ absence shortly before the game.

They have a lot of people. We have big challenges ahead. So Sabrina and JJ won’t be there, but others will. I guarantee you that.

Sydney Johnson, CoachWhen Ionescu, Jones, and Stewart complete the games, New York has a 10-0 record. Without them, the record is 13-15. The Liberty began the match in the thick of the fight for the playoffs, positioning themselves half a game behind Phoenix for fourth place and the advantage of playing at home in the first round.
