Shane Bieber Shines in Debut with Blue Jays
Miami – Shane Bieber showed his worth in his first encounter with the Toronto Blue Jays, striking out nine batters in six dominant innings and allowing only one run.
The right-handed pitcher, in his return to action after 16 months, allowed two hits and hit a batter in an outing of 87 pitches against the Miami Marlins on Friday night.
Bieber, who allowed a solo home run by Javier Sanoja in the second inning, retired 12 consecutive batters. The score at the time of his departure was 5-1 in favor of the Blue Jays.
This was Bieber’s first appearance in the Major Leagues since April 2, 2024, when he felt discomfort in his elbow and subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery.
The Blue Jays acquired the 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner from the Cleveland Guardians on July 31. Bieber had made four rehab starts with the Guardians before the trade.
Bieber, 30, played his first seven seasons with Cleveland. In the 60-game 2020 season, Bieber went 8-1 with the league’s lowest ERA (1.63) and led the American League in strikeouts with 122.
