Joey Ortiz to the Injured List; Brewers Adjust Their Roster

Milwaukee has placed Joey Ortiz on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, sources reported. This absence leaves the Brewers, leaders of the National League Central Division, without their starting shortstop. In addition to Ortiz’s situation, the Brewers have made other important decisions on their roster.
  • Jake Bauers, first baseman/outfielder, has been reinstated from the injured list.
  • Jackson Chourio, outfielder, has been sent to a rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Nashville team.
Ortiz suffered the injury during Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, in which the Brewers won 4-1. Manager Pat Murphy indicated that it is a low-grade strain, which could mean that Ortiz will not be out for long. Ortiz, 27 years old, has had a standout season, batting .233 with seven home runs, 43 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 125 games. His performance in August has been particularly good, with a batting average of .343 and an OPS of .830.

I felt like I was finally getting into a rhythm, especially offensively, and that I was starting to hit like I know I can. Things happen. It’s baseball. It’s going to happen. I just have to do what I can to get back.

Murphy announced that Andruw Monasterio will be the primary shortstop while Ortiz is out. Monasterio, 28, is batting .254 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 43 games. Bauers, 29, has been dealing with a left shoulder injury and hasn’t played in the majors since July 18. His batting average is .197 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 59 games.

Since April and May I have been dealing with this.

Chourio, 21, injured his right hamstring while running for a triple on July 29. The manager explained that Chourio needs to feel comfortable playing in the field for several days in a row to be able to return to the team. Chourio has a batting average of .276 with 17 home runs, 67 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 106 games.
