Michael Porter Jr. expressed his concern about the impact of sports betting on the integrity and enjoyment of the game, anticipating a worsening of the situation. During an interview on the “One Night with Steiny” podcast, Porter argued that the main focus in the sport has changed, prioritizing economic gains over the essence of the game. He pointed out that most people who participate in sports betting end up losing money.

The enjoyment of the game is no longer about the game. It’s so people can make money. In reality, many more people are losing money than making money.

The basketball player referenced his brother Jontay’s gambling issues, who was banned from the NBA in 2024. Jontay admitted to participating in a betting scheme that led him to miss two games to benefit associates who had bet that his statistics would be below expectations. Michael Porter Jr., who was traded to the Brooklyn Nets this offseason, indicated that he understands how players from disadvantaged backgrounds can succumb to the temptations of sports betting.

Think about it, if you could make all your friends rich by telling them: ‘Bet $10,000 that I won’t score many points in this game. I’m going to fake an injury and sit down. I’ll come out after three minutes.’ And everyone gets a little money because you did it in a game.

Porter also mentioned that players are in an unfavorable situation with bettors, as they constantly “ruin” bets, both over and under, in prop bets that have become more popular with the expansion of legal sports betting. The player revealed that they have received death threats, and reflected on the possible consequences of a physical attack by a disturbed gambler. Porter suggested that sports betting should be limited to physical locations, such as Las Vegas, and not be available online.

The entire sports betting entity… is bad and is only going to get worse.
