In a billboard full of action, Carlos Canizales avenged his defeat against Petchmanee CP Freshmart with a knockout in the fifth round, conquering the WBC super flyweight title and ascending to number 5 in the Alofoke Deportes ranking. The fight took place in Caracas, Venezuela. In Chicago, Oscar Duarte defeated Kenneth Sims Jr. by majority decision in a super lightweight title eliminator for the WBA. Despite the intensity of the fight between Duarte and Sims, Duarte’s strength and constant pressure were decisive for the victory. This result could lead Duarte to challenge champion Gary Antuanne Russell. Both boxers remain outside the top 10 of the super lightweight rankings. The co-main event, a showdown between Regis Prograis and Joseph “Jojo” Diaz, was the highlight of the weekend. Prograis took the victory by unanimous decision in a fight between two former champions desperately seeking a win. Prograis, with his effective jab, added important points against Diaz, despite the latter managing to connect significant blows, even managing to stagger Prograis. Diaz, seeking to change his luck, could not achieve the knockout, while Prograis showed resilience. Diaz also had to deal with an injury to his left eye, but continued fighting. Prograis, with his jab and left hook, kept Diaz at bay, obtaining two cards of 96-94 and one of 98-92.

I felt like I won the fight. My jab was working all night. I was connecting with it. I think he connected with some hard shots, but at the same time I was never [hurt]. I was probably dazed the first time he connected, but after that, I wasn’t dazed anymore.

Regis Prograis
Prograis and Diaz remain outside the top 10 in the super lightweight division. Alofoke Deportes’ boxing rankings highlight the best boxers in each weight category. These rankings are updated based on recent results and performances. Boxers who have announced their change of weight category will be ranked in their new division, if applicable, once they have fought in it. Boxers holding titles in two divisions may be ranked in both. Boxers who have not competed in the last 12 months, and who do not have a scheduled fight, will be removed from the rankings until they fight again. Any boxer who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. This boxer may re-enter the rankings after their next fight.
