Jordan Love will undergo thumb surgery, but is expected to be ready for the start of the season

The Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback, Jordan Love, will undergo a procedure to repair an injury to the ligament in his left thumb. Despite this, the team expects him to be fully recovered for the season opener. Love, who had already been with his left thumb bandaged during Monday’s practice, tried to play despite the injury before deciding to undergo surgery.

The best option for him to return as quickly as possible and feel his best.

Brian Gutekunst, Packers General Manager
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst reported on Tuesday that Love could return to training as early as next week, adding that the procedure was “the best option for him to return as quickly as possible and feel his best.” Gutekunst explained that Love suffered the injury during the first preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday. Love participated in two series in that game. Although he didn’t seem limited in Monday’s practice, he had to use his right hand (the throwing one) to deliver the ball in plays where he would normally use his left. “You saw it there [in practice], it certainly could work,” Gutekunst said. Gutekunst added that Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, NFC North rivals, on September 7. “I don’t foresee this affecting him in the long term,” Gutekunst concluded.
