MONTREAL – Elena Rybakina secured her spot in the semi-finals of the Canadian Open after Marta Kostyuk’s withdrawal due to an apparent arm injury. The score reflected a Rybakina lead of 6-1 and 2-1 at the time of the interruption.

Rybakina, ninth seed and representing Kazakhstan, converted three of the ten break opportunities she had during the quarter-final match at the IGA Stadium. The match was stopped at 54 minutes, at which point both players shook hands and Kostyuk, seeded number 24, left the court in tears.

After the third game, the Ukrainian coaches taped their forearm with medical tape.

Rybakina will face the winner of the match between young Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.

Mboko surprised top seed Coco Gauff on Saturday, winning the uneven match in straight sets in just 62 minutes.

The 18-year-old from Toronto has climbed from outside the top 300 to 85th in the WTA ranking in a breakthrough year.

The tournament final is scheduled for Thursday. It is worth noting that the top five seeds of the event were eliminated before the quarterfinals.
